Ever wondered why your little one can spend SO much time pouring water from one cup to another? 😆
Or why they love touching sand, squeezing playdough, jumping on cushions or making noise with almost anything they can find?
Mommies and daddies, this is where sensory play comes in!
Sensory play simply means play that lets children explore using their senses.
We usually think about the 5 senses:
👀 Seeing
👂 Hearing
✋ Touching
👃 Smelling
👅 Tasting
But children also use their sense of movement, balance and body awareness while they play.
That means climbing, spinning, pushing, pulling, squeezing and jumping can be part of sensory play too!
Why is sensory play important?
For little ones, playing is one of the ways they discover how the world works.
Think about something as simple as playing with water.
Your child may be:
💦 Feeling whether the water is warm or cold
🥤 Learning that a full cup feels heavier
👀 Watching water move from one container to another
✋ Practising how to hold, pour and squeeze
😆 Discovering what happens when they splash too hard!
It may look like “just playing”, but there is actually lots of exploring happening at the same time.
Sensory play doesn't need to be complicated
Good news — you DON'T need a special sensory room or expensive toys.
Many things around your home can become sensory play materials.
Try:
🧽 Squeezing a wet sponge
🥣 Pouring water between cups
🧊 Touching and watching ice melt
📦 Crawling through a cardboard box
🧸 Feeling soft and rough objects
🎵 Shaking containers to make different sounds
The idea is not to teach your child the “right” way to play.
Let them touch, try, repeat and explore at their own pace.
Sometimes the simplest activity is the one they want to do again…and again…and again. 😂
And that's okay!
Every little squeeze, splash, jump and discovery can be part of how your child learns about the world around them.
🌱 Explore together. Play together. Grow together.
