12 Weeks Together
12 Weeks Together
Almost through the first trimester 💛
You've reached the last week of the first trimester. It's a big milestone, and a good moment to take a breath and appreciate how far you've come.
📌 Week 12 at a glance
- Trimester: First (last week)
- Baby's size: about the size of a lime (around 5 cm)
- Still to come: roughly 28 weeks (a typical pregnancy lasts around 40 weeks)
🌱 Your little one this week
At 12 weeks, your baby is about 5 cm long, roughly the size of a lime. The brain keeps developing, and tiny fingernails and toenails are starting to form. Your baby's reflexes are developing too, and the organs that formed in the earlier weeks will keep growing and maturing from here.
It's amazing to think that just a few weeks ago, your baby was the size of a poppy seed.
🌷 And how about you, Mum?
Around now, many mums notice that nausea and tiredness start to ease. Sensitivity to smells often improves after the first trimester too, though for some mums it sticks around a little longer. You might start to feel more like yourself again.
If you're still feeling queasy or tired, that's okay too. Every pregnancy moves at its own pace. You may also notice your clothes feeling snug, and with a first pregnancy a bump often becomes more visible a little later.
🍽️ Food for thought: zinc
Zinc is a mineral that contributes to normal cell division, which is happening everywhere in a growing baby. It also supports a healthy immune system.
Everyday foods that contain zinc include:
- Eggs and chicken
- Beans, lentils and tofu
- Cashews, pumpkin seeds and other nuts and seeds
- Wholegrains such as oats and brown rice
If you've been taking any supplements your doctor suggested, they can tell you what's best to continue. Your doctor, midwife or dietitian can answer any questions about food and supplements.
✨ Little things that may feel nice
- Many mums enjoy marking the end of the first trimester in a small way, like a favourite meal or a walk
- As energy returns, a gentle walk or stretch can feel good
- Comfortable, stretchy clothes are your friend as your body changes
- Some mums like to start a little pregnancy journal around now
🩺 Coming up
Around now, many mums have their dating scan, and some are offered first trimester screening tests. These are optional, and you can ask your doctor or midwife what each one involves so you can decide what feels right for you. After this week, you'll move into the second trimester, which many mums describe as a more comfortable stretch.
Some mums also feel ready to share their news around now. There's no right time, so it's entirely up to you.
👨👩👧 Partner's corner
This is a lovely time to celebrate together. If the news is going to be shared, you might talk about how and when. And as energy comes back, small shared plans, like a walk or a baby-name chat, can be a gentle way to look ahead.
❓ Quick questions
Is week 12 the end of the first trimester?
Yes, the first trimester usually runs up to the end of week 12, and the second trimester follows.
Will my symptoms go away now?
Many mums notice that symptoms ease around now, but everyone is different. Some feel better sooner, and some a little later.
💛 A little moment for the two of you
Twelve weeks. A poppy seed became a lime, and you did it one day at a time.
